Visual artists have a free, new resource to help them understand how the art world works and make a living from their creativity.  CLIP (Creators Learn Intellectual Property), the online platform for creators by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is launching CLIP Visual Arts.

Understanding copyright and IP rights in visual arts

When someone buys my painting, are they buying the copyright? What’s the difference between licensing my work and transferring my rights? Can someone take a photo of my mural and sell it without my permission?

Creating art is just the beginning of an artist’s professional journey. Every artwork comes with rights. And as the work travels beyond the studio, the artist encounters questions around authorship, copyright protection, attribution, licensing, exhibitions and commercialization.

CLIP Visual Arts empowers artists with a strong understanding of their rights so they can make informed decisions about how their work is used, shared, protected and commercialized.

Through short-form articles containing practical content and introductory videos featuring creators, CLIP makes complex legal concepts easier to understand. Topics include authorship and ownership, copyright protection for artworks, creators’ rights, attribution and provenance, licensing and rights transfer, exhibiting and sharing artworks, and resolving disputes.

Created with creators, for creators

Combining down-to-earth explanations of intellectual property with insights and real-world experiences from artists and other art professionals, CLIP addresses complex topics that are directly relevant to creators’ everyday realities. Its content is designed to be objective, balanced, and neutral, offering useful information that helps creators make informed decisions.

CLIP’s content is developed in close collaboration with the WIPO for Creators Advisory Board, which brings together organizations that represent creators and other stakeholders from across the creative industries. This collaborative approach helps ensure that the platform reflects the needs and experiences of creators while providing reliable, practical information they can use throughout their careers.

Currently available in English, CLIP Visual Arts will soon be available in several other languages.

Creators Learn Intellectual Property (CLIP)

CLIP was launched in 2023 by WIPO for Creators, a consortium led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United Nations agency that serves the world’s innovators and creators.

CLIP Visual Arts builds on CLIP Music. With this new chapter dedicated to visual artists, CLIP advances its mission of raising awareness of intellectual property rights and related processes to inspire and empower creators around the world.

CLIP is offered by WIPO, completely free of charge.
